    Isabel Dalhousie thinks often of friends, sometimes of lovers, and on occasion of chocolate. As an Edinburgh philosopher she is certain of where she stands. She can review a book called In Praise of Sin with panache and conviction, but real life is... well, perhaps a bit more challenging - particularly when it comes to her feelings for Jamie, a younger man who should have married her niece, Cat. Jamie's handsomeness leaves Isabel feeling distinctly uneasy, and ethically disturbed. 'I am a philosopher', she thinks, 'but I am also a woman'. And more disturbance is in store. La sua vita al momento è troppo affollata di pensieri: trovare un appartamento per la fedele governante Grace, evitare alla giovane nipote Cat nuove delusioni d'amore, conservare l'amicizia con Jamie, l'ex fidanzato della nipote, nonostante il fatto che si sia irrimediabilmente innamorata di lui e le riesca davvero difficile mantenere le distanze. Ma soprattutto Isabel si annoia. Nelle sue giornate manca l'azione. Finché all'improvviso all'orizzonte compare un colto e gentile milionario americano, impegnato in un rapporto di coppia avvilente che potrebbe addirittura metterne a repentaglio la vita, e la filosofa Isabel Dalhousie si ritroverà presto coinvolta in un sorprendente giallo dei sentimenti.

E certo, ha trovato un equilibrio nel rapporto con Grace, la fedele governante, che vorrebbe esautorarla completamente dalla cura del bebé. Ma che dire della misteriosa morte di un pittore al largo dell'isola di Jura, nella quale Isabel si trova suo malgrado coinvolta? E come se tutto ciò non bastasse, ci si mette pure il machiavellico e curiosamente affabile professor Dove, che sembra avere strane mire sull'amatissima rivista della nostra eroina...
